Adam's Approach

I (pronouns: he/they) work to build a genuine relationship with my clients, emphasizing teamwork and encouraging your active participation in the counseling process. I trust you as the ‘expert’ with the lived experience to help identify realistic solutions to life’s challenges. Using an integrative approach to counseling, I will help you harness inner strengths and self-compassion, while instilling hope and self-confidence to overcome obstacles preventing your personal growth and wellness. I most frequently rely on the tenets of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as Interpersonal and Feminist theories to guide the therapeutic process.

I integrate components of attachment theory and enjoy using humor to connect and support change.

I will aim to validate and remain sensitive to the power dynamics, political events, and cultural complexities impacting folks with multiple, intersecting identities. As a white queer person, I will encourage your personal and professional questions, and will strive toward continuous accountability for the ways my own personal lived experiences impact the therapeutic process and our relationship.

I especially enjoy working with artists, activists, and professional students.  I am passionate about providing ethical care to persons with marginalized identities, and I am committed to the shared development of anti-racist values and identities among other white folks.

Personal
I grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, but I have lived in Columbus, Ohio for most of my adult life.  I completed my sex therapy training while living in Chicago, Illinois from 2016-2020.  While in Chicago, I met my husband and became a "dog parent" to Baloo.  I returned to Columbus in 2020 to be back among close family and friends.  I wanted to be an actor and a teacher growing up, and kind of feel like I became a therapist by accident. While I never imagined becoming a sex therapist, I see this role as a great privilege to walk 'in tandem' with so many courageous and willing people committed to their own therapeutic journey.
Training and Experience

I am a mental health counselor, and a Certified Sex Therapist.  I received my Master of Arts in Counselor Education in 2012 and completed my doctoral candidacy (ABD) in Counselor Education in 2015 with a specialization in gender and sexuality.  Much of my academic interests and research focused on men’s gendered practice of health and wellness, as well as issues relating to gender socialization; LGBTQI-affirmative practice; and sexual violence prevention. I have presented on these topics at the regional and national level, authored peer-reviewed publications, and developed sexual violence prevention programming for men.  I have previous clinical and supervisory experience in grade school, college counseling, and private practice settings, and have really enjoyed my prior work with graduate and professional students.

Deciding against a career in academia, I postponed the completion of my doctorate in 2017 to pursue an interest in human sexuality.  I am especially passionate about helping individuals overcome obstacles to sexual pleasure and intimacy. I received my sexual health certificate in 2017 from the University of Michigan School of Social Work and became an AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist in 2018. I am kink-knowledgeable, fetish-friendly, and passionate about supporting the integration of diverse identities and healthy sexual practice.
