Community Engagement

Community Engagement

We endeavor to advocate for change outside of the traditional therapeutic relationship knowing that therapeutic success and sustainable change requires revolutionary change in our laws, systems, and institutions, as well as the communities where we live, work, and heal.  Through our engagement, we hope to demonstrate accountability for harm and injustice we have caused via direct and complicit engagement in those same systems and institutions that we are advocating against.

As an organization, it is important to acknowledge that our complicity is reflected in-part by our existing and continued operation on indigenous lands.  Our physical office space is built on the ancestral land of the Myaamia, Shawnee, Kaskaskia, and Hopewell Tribes.  We recognize our mental health practices are often rooted in indigenous spiritual and healing practices that have been misused, sometimes resulting in greater harm to clients and the communities of origin.  We also acknowledge that our understanding of gender and sexuality is linked to the lived and existing experiences of two-spirit people who are necessary to our collective liberation. As an organization, we commit to the financial practice of voluntary land tax, acknowledging the importance of this land and its stewardship by indigenous people and communities who were here long before.  We additionally acknowledge the ongoing mental health impact from settler-colonization on people and families who have voluntarily and involuntarily lived on this land for generations and who sometimes experience the most difficulty accessing our services.  Your resilience and sacrifice are not forgotten, and we commit ourselves to the creation of a society where rest is prioritized and resilience is no longer required to survive.  We are proud to support Land Back NAICCO, and endeavor to ally ourselves with the wellness goals of the people and communities who were never the beneficiaries of colonization.
